Welcome to Burg Ludwigstein!
Burg Ludwigstein is a 15th century castle overlooking the river Werra and surrounded by beautiful woodland. It is situated southwest of the town of Witzenhausen (Nordhessen) and can easily be reached by car or train and bus. Grounded in 1415 the castle's buildings today were built in the 16th and 20th century The Wandervogel and German Youth Movement joined its history when they joined together to save the Burg. They bought the castle, renovated it, and founded a memorial for the Wandervogel that were killed in the 1st World War. The group that was founded in 1945 still take an active part in the history of the castle and in its support.
In the castle Burg Ludwigstein itself there are many free-time activities on offer to Youth groups, school classes, families, education and studies:
* 170 beds in 2 bedded or many bedded rooms
* 15 beds in the 'Pump house', self-cooking
* A large hall with places for 200 people, containing a theater stage, piano and organ.
* A large modern kitchen with a large dining room containing a historical fire place.
* 9 common rooms/ day rooms for 20-120 people.
* Indoor swimming pool and sauna.
* Table tennis.
* Camping site and fire places.
* TV and Video.
* Guided tour of the castle.
* Ecological activities for kids offered by the'Jugendbildungsstätte'.
* Wandering in the beautiful surrounding area.
The castles educational center offers both daily programs and weekend seminars, ranging from ecological topics to music and political education.
Also on site is the Archive of the German Youth Movement with its own library and special collection to be studied.
The fact that Burg Ludwigstein is situated on the 'Hessisch- Thüringisch' border means that there is the wonderful opportunity of excursions to both Thüringen and Hessen. Within easy walking distance there is the ruined castle 'Hanstein' and the towns of Witzenhausen, Bad Sooden-Allendorf and Eschwege are easily reached by bus or bicycle. For larger attractions Göttingen and Kassel can be visited by car, bus or train.
DIRECTIONS
Motorway - BAB 7. The castle is situated by the B27 between Witzenhausen and Bad Sooden-Allendorf. The well signed drive begins from a siding by the B27.
For short visits there is a car park just above the memorial graveyard and for guests there is a parking lot directly by the castle.
Take a train to Witzenhausen Nord station and then take a Taxi which takes about 10 minutes or a bus to bus-stop Ludwigstein from where there is about a 10 minutes walk up to the castle.
